BD178: Rock Of Ages
In the middle of a peaceful and sheltered Northumberland village is a farmhouse with a dramatic past. Julie Oswald’s Grade II listed Tudor bastle is an inspiring combination of the rustic and the contemporary.
All across Northumberland and edging into Scotland is a network of fortified 16th and 17th Century farmhouses. They go by the name of ‘bastle’ from the French ‘bastille’, and during the border skirmishes they were in the thick of the action. At the first sight of Border Reiver trouble, farmers would drive their stock inside them, bolt the door fast, then the family would climb up into the house above, pull up their ladder and bar the trap door behind them.
